The Brief

Designing a Uniform as Community-Led as the Brand Itself

Murray Uniforms have been a fantastic partner throughout the design phase of our new uniform. Their team brought creativity, attention to detail, and a strong understanding of our brand, resulting in a beautifully considered design that truly reflects who we are. Their project management and communication were consistently impressive, giving us confidence at every stage.

Leanne JoelContracts Manager, Southern Coop

We were especially pleased with how well the designs were received by our stores, with colleagues responding positively to the look, feel, and thought behind the new uniform. We've been delighted with the experience of working with Murray Uniforms and would happily recommend them to others seeking a collaborative and highly capable uniform partner.

1

Improved Fabrics

Single jersey was introduced across key garments to deliver enhanced comfort, breathability and lasting durability. The new fabric specification is soft-touch, easy-care and long-wearing with the opportunity to integrate sustainable fibres aligned with Co-op values.
2

Enhanced Fit & Sizing

Block development was refined across the entire collection to deliver consistent fit across all garment types. The size range was extended to genuinely support inclusivity ensuring every colleague, regardless of body shape or size, can wear their uniform with confidence.
3

Strengthened Brand Identity

The new uniform makes clear and considered use of The Southern Co-operative's colour palette and brand cues. Elevated detailing through trims, finishes and carefully placed branding, creates a cohesive look that connects every colleague across every role and every store.
4

Heritage and Storytelling

Southern Co-op's rich history informed the entire design direction. Understated details (including rubber 2-tonal badges and considered internal trim detailing) translate that heritage into something wearable. The result balances modern design sensibility with timeless, authentic character.
5

Role Functionality

Every garment responds to the realities of working in a busy retail environment. Practical features including pockets, stretch fabrics, and easy fastening systems are built into each design, alongside a 2-in-1 jacket with a removable soft-shell sleeve, supporting colleagues across a range of tasks, temperatures, and environments.
6

Confidence through Design

Murray Uniforms research with Coventry University found that 96% of employees believe customers judge a company by the uniform they wear. Every design decision in this programme, from the quality of the fabric to the precision of the cut, was made with that in mind.

97%

of employees say it’s important that their uniform represents the company brand.

A Uniform Colleagues are Proud to Wear

5

Functional by Design

Role-specific features, from stretch panels and pocket placements to the convertible jacket, give colleagues the practicality they need without compromising on appearance.
6

Collaborative Partnership

Murray's project management and communication gave The Southern Co-operative confidence at every stage from initial brief through to final delivery.

What Retailers can Learn from this Programme

For organisations in community retail, a uniform is far more than a dress code. It is a daily expression of your values seen by every customer, worn by every colleague, in every interaction.

  • A stock uniform can serve a function, but only a bespoke programme can tell a brand story.
  • Fit and inclusivity are not optional extras. Colleagues who feel good in their uniform perform better and engage more positively with customers. 91% of employees say what they wear impacts their confidence. (Murray Uniforms x Coventry University)
  • Heritage is a design asset. Community brands have a richness of history that, when translated thoughtfully into uniform, creates a sense of shared identity and pride.
  • Fabric quality directly affects both colleague experience and programme cost. Longer-lasting garments reduce replacement frequency and improve sustainability outcomes.
  • The uniform programme review is an opportunity, not just a procurement exercise. Approached strategically, it becomes a lever for engagement, culture, and brand consistency.
Design considerations for bespoke uniform

What did Murray's design for the Southern Co-op?

Murray Uniforms designed a fully bespoke uniform collection for The Southern Co-operative, including a 2-in-1 convertible jacket (with removable soft-shell sleeve), polo shirts, and a complete head-to-toe range. The programme focused on improving fabric quality through single jersey, broadening size inclusivity, strengthening brand identity, and incorporating heritage-inspired design details including rubber 2-tonal badges and considered internal trim details.

How is this different from Murray Uniforms' earlier work with Southern Co-op?

Murray Uniforms has partnered with The Southern Co-operative since 2021. The original programme focused on uniform supply, stock management, online ordering, and fully managed distribution across 210+ sites. This design programme is the natural next chapter — a full bespoke redesign of the uniform collection focused on fabric quality, brand identity, size inclusivity and heritage storytelling.

How did Murray incorporate Southern Co-op's heritage into the uniform?

Heritage was translated into understated, wearable details; rubber 2-tonal badges, external and internal trim detailing and a carefully considered colour palette drawn from the brand’s identity. The approach balanced a modern design sensibility with timeless, authentic character, so the uniform tells the brand’s community story without being overt.

What fabric improvements were made?

Single jersey was introduced across key garments to deliver enhanced comfort, breathability and lasting durability. The new specification is soft-touch, easy-care, and long-wearing directly addressing previous issues with colour retention and garment shape over time. The design also considered the integration of sustainable fibres aligned with Co-op values.

What is the Science of Uniform® and how was it used here?

The Science of Uniform® is Murray’s research-led design methodology, developed through an independent study with Coventry University (2,500+ respondents). It identifies over 240 factors that determine how a uniform performs for both the wearer and the brand. For the Southern Co-op design programme, it guided decisions across fabric selection, block development, inclusive sizing, functional features, and brand expression.

Considering a Uniform Programme Review?

Many organisations only review their uniform programmes when circumstances change. But the right moment to act is earlier than most realise.

  • Brand refresh or rebrand underway
  • Inconsistent garment quality across sites
  • Supplier reliability concerns
  • Rising garment replacement costs
  • Diversity and inclusion commitments
  • Declining colleague satisfaction with workwear
  • Sustainability & ESG targets to meet

A strategic review can help organisations improve both wearer experience and long-term operational performance.
