The Science of Uniform®
How Successful Retail Uniform Programmes Are Designed
For large retail organisations, successful uniform programmes balance brand identity, colleague experience and operational logistics. Ensuring the uniform works consistently across every store, every shift and every employee.
When programmes are poorly designed, retailers typically see:
• inconsistent store presentation
• low colleague adoption
• rising replacement costs
• operational complexity across locations
Murray Uniforms approaches retail uniform differently. Using our research-led Science of Uniform® methodology, we design and manage uniform programmes that work across large retail networks. Strengthening brand visibility, improving colleague confidence and reducing total cost of ownership.

Case Study: Improving Colleague Visibility - Dunelm
The brief: To create a modern, on-trend uniform that stood out to customers in-store and that employees felt comfortable wearing.
The approach: Our initial discovery found that a considerable portion of colleagues said they’d been mistaken for other retailers such as ASDA, Homebase, and Co-Op, signalling a significant loss of brand identity. After further discovery with all stakeholders, from the shop floor to senior leadership, our design team produced several bespoke uniform concepts for Dunelm with the objective of increasing colleague visibility, engagement, and confidence.
The results: Dunelm saw a substantial increase in sales in stores that had implemented the new uniform, which reinforced the Dunelm brand and stood out amongst shoppers. Crucially, Dunelm employees also felt proud and happy to wear the new uniform.

The Science of Uniform for Retail
The Science of Uniform® is Murray Uniforms’ research-led methodology for designing and managing uniform programmes that improve colleague wellbeing, strengthen brand identity and perform operationally across large organisations.
Our research has identified more than 240 factors that influence whether a uniform programme succeeds. From garment comfort and fabric performance to sizing distribution, brand visibility and supply logistics.
By analysing these variables during the design process, we ensure uniform programmes work not just on launch day, but throughout their operational lifecycle.
The Science of Uniform® considers factors including:
• garment comfort during long retail shifts
• colleague visibility and brand recognition in-store
• sizing and fit across diverse workforces
• fabric durability and garment lifecycle
• logistics and distribution across multiple locations
What you wear matters, we know why…

Frequently Asked Questions about Retail Uniform Programmes

Managed programmes include design, production, forecasting, logistics and ongoing programme optimisation rather than simply supplying garments.
How long does a retail uniform programme take to implement?
Most large programmes take 12–18 months, depending on the scale and complexity of the organisation. But this can be done more quickly if needed.
What should retailers look for in a uniform supplier?
Retailers should evaluate suppliers based on service reliability, garment durability, design capability, sustainability credentials and long-term operational support.
