The Future of What People Wear at Work

Format: Talk
Speaker: Rebecca Ryder-Caddy, Coventry University

What we wear to work says a lot about who we are, but is that changing?

This session takes a look at the future of workplace dress. From the slow death of the formal suit to the explosion of hybrid working, smart fabrics, and a generation of professionals who expect their clothing to reflect their values, the world of workwear is being transformed from the inside out.

We’ll explore the forces reshaping what people put on in the morning, whether that’s a desire for greater comfort and sustainability, the blurring of personal and professional identity, or the growing demand for inclusivity in how dress codes are written and applied.

Is the workplace uniform dead or just being reinvented? Does what we wear still define how seriously we are taken? And what does the ideal work wardrobe actually look like in 2026?

This is precisely the challenge Murray Uniforms has set for students at Coventry University. Through their 2026 Industry Design Brief, students have been asked to develop their own vision for the future of corporate fashion designing a cohesive collection of 4–6 pieces that tells a story about where professional dress is heading and why. It’s a real-world challenge that puts research, creativity, and genuine human insight at its heart.

Their responses to that brief and the ideas, questions, and tensions they surface will bring this conversation to life at the event, giving us a fascinating window into how the next generation of designers and emerging workplace professionals see the future of what we wear to work.
