A uniform with a modern, professional look to reinvigorate the brand’s image and attract new customers and talent.

Introduction

Mecca Bingo, founded in 1961, have celebrated their 60th anniversary with a rebrand. This was the perfect opportunity to refresh the uniform to give Britain’s go-to bingo brand a contemporary yet professional look to appeal to a new generation of customers. Mecca Bingo reached out to Murray to create a bespoke solution on a short timeline, as they urgently needed a uniform overhaul.

The key objective was to create a modern, professional, premium quality uniform that workers are proud to wear, whilst improving confidence and employee wellbeing. Finally, the new look was needed to facilitate brand consistency.

Our Response

Mecca Bingo followed the Murray Science of Uniform® process which allowed us to understand the needs of the business and discover the key operating metrics uniform could impact.

Our initial discovery found that the uniform was out of date and infrequently worn by colleagues, the dress code had become very relaxed, unstructured, and sometimes inappropriate. The lack of a cohesive image made it difficult for customers to spot employees.

After consultation with stakeholders, our design team produced a variety of comfortable, smart looking uniform that consisted of a bespoke shirt, an innovative stretch chino, chef’s outfit, and our showpiece bespoke jacket. These garments enabled colleagues to look smarter, feel smarter, and ultimately, Work Smarter®.

Innovative Features and Design

Mecca Bingo is a fast-paced environment, so innovative features were imperative to help keep employees comfortable while doing their jobs. The team member shirt features a transformable sleeve, allowing the shirt to be worn either short sleeved or long sleeved, making it perfect to wear all year round and comfortable to wear on busy days where it can get quite hot.

The bespoke hybrid jacket has two complementary fabrics for a modern, practical look that gives it an on-trend look which helps attract younger staff. It has a quilted front and a sweatshirt style back for warmth and comfort.

A fun yet cohesive and professional look was created with blue button-down team member shirts and a vibrant gingham button down shirt. The colourful Mecca logo is embroidered on the shirts, aprons, chef’s outfit, and jackets for maintenance and team members.

The bespoke shirt has discrete modesty buttons in the female fit to make them feel confident when serving customers. The bespoke buttons have Mecca engraved in them for brand consistency in even the smallest details.

A good, flattering fit is important and two key features of the trousers are an innovative integral waist extender to give that customised fit and a stretch fabric for comfort.

Customer Experience

Having a great uniform is brilliant but it’s important that colleagues wear it.

Murray listened to wearers during the consultancy process to create a uniform that was on trend, comfortable and inspired confidence in the wearer ensuring that colleagues were proud and happy to wear the uniform.

Our stock management, online ordering and allocation controls ensure that new starters can receive new uniforms promptly.

We used our university-backed Science of Uniform® research to guide specific design decisions to impact the confidence of the wearers and their ability to spontaneously engage with customers.

The Uniform

Time was of the essence, so we scheduled extensive fit sessions with colleagues trying on core products, where they provided feedback on fit, function, and comfort. A speedy rollout was carried out over two weeks.

To make the process as efficient as possible, we put together dedicated boxes for each wearer and every venue was dispatched in full.
